Imagine this – Boys and girls aged 17+ and most importantly Indians. Yes they all have just crossed the rigmarole of the so called “Board exams”. To put it up in other words “the torture that is perceived in India”. And there are 50 lakhs of them. This was expected and awaited for more than 5 years before that and the torture lasted for 2 years. Kids..Just out of school are much relaxed and jigging like juveniles. They all have their own dreams and much excited to make it happen.
I’m writing this from a parent perspective.
What do these children have to look forward to? Only 10,000 of them will make it into IIT. Another 2000 will clear medical entrance. I am just stopping the numbers since I am not good at it. A few thousands will make it into some government colleges on merit since they lost IIT with a difference of 0.5 cut-off.
Now! Let’s get to the point...! What about the rest? Abroad studies? Hardly a few from a rich background will make it up but again what about others? Private education? And yes! there are many out there that have just bare walls, where a handy group of recently passed out PG students call themselves as teaching faculty. Books which travel from library to library across colleges when inspection teams visit. Labs, where a few set of screw drivers and few broken boxes which they call it “KIT” and has to be shared by the 6 members. Oh! So you call this a practical training? Sports, Oh is there something called like that in engineering colleges? Swimming pool? Tennis court? Oh! Let me stop at it. May be I am expecting too much. These jargons are never heard by the students in the college. Gyms? Oh yeah may be the lone treadmill. Hockey? Now what’s that? Cricket? Yes it works! Because it is India and boys would generally bring bat and ball form home. Now coming to girls, there is just a blank and nothing much. Let me stop at it.
Let me get into the food section, Canteen/mess – one of the great pleasures of college life! what are they served by the way? Watery lentils, dry/cold breads, sour curd, no milk, occasionally eggs, insect-infested-oily vegetable? Oops again let me stop at this. I am unable to imagine this shit further.
Imagine this horror for 4 years at a so called “Engineering College”.
Are children to be blamed for not showing interest in studies? Are they to be blamed for not getting placed? Is it worth the fess that they are paying to the institute? Agreed that there are a few colleges that may not dish out this horror story, but how many? Why government is much interested in IPL and not in education? Why there are no institutes for the past 3 decades that could compete IIT? Why the number of license for bars and wine shops are literally increasing day by day and still the count of branded institutes like IIT is the same? Why education in India has become a mere business for politicians? Why there are no strict reforms for opening new colleges? Are we really progressing? Or is it still a billion dollar question?
As long as students join colleges for 'placements' and 'jobs', Govt. and Founders will treat colleges as business.
ReplyDeleteIf students want education and expertise, and not join colleges that run only for making money, how can such colleges continue to flourish?
Yeah bro.. you are right.. but on the other side.. if the colleges are opened with good reforms even a student who joins for the sake of placement will be interested in learning new things.. and that should be the ideal case....!
ReplyDeleteNice illustration of the thoughts that's going around in every student's mind. Eloquently written.
